Mnemosyne: saving the web

Websites disappear every day. The Archive Team saves them for the Internet Archive before they are gone. With Mnemosyne your computer runs the Archive Team's Warrior for four hours at a time and downloads pages, videos and forum posts that are about to be lost.

Archive Team: wiki.archiveteam.org

How to take part

  1. Install Docker or Podman (Linux, or macOS with Podman).
  2. In your project preferences tick Mnemosyne. It is never started unless you tick it yourself.
  3. BOINC then starts a four-hour session: one CPU core, at most 1.5 GB of memory, and your internet connection. The first session downloads about 1 GB, later ones reuse it.

Windows: install the current BOINC client, turn on WSL 2 (Microsoft has a guide), then download the latest boinc-buda-runner-wsl-installer.exe from the Releases page of github.com/BOINC/boinc-buda-runner-wsl and double-click it. It sets up Podman inside WSL for BOINC. Restart BOINC; its event log should then report WSL and Podman as detected. Docker Desktop is not needed. If BOINC says it cannot use the docker CLI from the docker-desktop distribution, use this runner instead.

Docker and Podman can get in the way of VirtualBox: on Windows, Docker runs through WSL 2 (Hyper-V), and VirtualBox-based BOINC projects on the same computer may then fail to start or run much more slowly. If you run VirtualBox applications, do not tick Mnemosyne on that computer.

The sites being saved see requests from your IP address. Everything is public data, but if you are not comfortable with that, do not tick Mnemosyne. The nickname used at the Archive Team is BitBoinc; your own name is never sent.
