bitboinc is run by one person. This page explains what personal data the site holds, why, who else sees it, and how you can have it corrected or deleted. It is also the information notice required by Article 10 of the Turkish law no. 6698.

Who can use this site

To use this site you must be at least 18 years old, or of legal age (the age of majority) in your country.

Who is responsible

If you never do, you are only counted, never named.
Technical logsThe web server and the work scheduler log IP addresses and requests. Web server logs are rotated daily and kept for 14 days; scheduler logs are kept only as long as needed to find problems.

Why we use it

We do not sell personal data and do not use it for advertising.

What is public

Your user name, credit, team, badges, join date, the country you set, your profile and forum posts, and the leaderboards on the progress pages. Your computers are listed on your public page unless you switch that off in your account settings. Your email address is never shown.

If you chose to be named in publications, your name and country will appear in the acknowledgements of the papers that use results from your computers. A paper that has been published cannot be changed afterwards, so please decide with that in mind. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time; it then applies to publications that have not been published yet.

Who else is involved

The server itself is operated by us in Turkey. Data is transferred abroad only because of the services above and only as far as the service requires.

How long we keep it

While your account exists. If you ask us to delete it, we remove or anonymise it (user name changed, email removed). The scientific results your computers returned stay as anonymous data. Forum posts may be anonymised instead of removed so threads stay readable.

Your rights

Under the Turkish law (KVKK Art. 11) and the GDPR (Arts. 15-21) you have the right to: learn whether your personal data is processed and ask for information about it; learn the purpose of the processing and whether it is used accordingly; know the third parties in Turkey or abroad to whom it is transferred; ask for correction if it is incomplete or wrong; ask for deletion or destruction and have this notified to those third parties; object to a result against you that comes from analysis by automated systems; and claim compensation if you suffer damage from unlawful processing. Under the GDPR you can also restrict the processing, receive your data in a portable format and withdraw consent you gave.

How to apply

Send a private message to the contact above while logged in (writing from your account lets us confirm who you are); we answer within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with the answer you can complain to your data protection authority (in Turkey: the Personal Data Protection Board; in the EU: the authority of your country).

Using your computer: your responsibility

Taking part means your computer (processor and graphics card) works hard for long periods, which means more heat, more electricity and more wear. You decide whether, when and how much it computes, using the BOINC preferences and the preferences on this site. Any fault, damage, data loss, overheating, hardware wear, higher electricity costs or other problem that may occur on your devices while computing is your own responsibility, and the project and its operator are not liable for it, to the extent the law allows. The software and the web site are provided “as is”, without any warranty. Please make sure your hardware is cooled properly, limit the processor and graphics card use in the preferences if needed, keep backups of your data, and only run bitboinc on computers you own or have the owner’s permission to use.

Your internet connection

Computing means downloading task files and uploading results, from a few megabytes to about a hundred megabytes per task depending on the application. If your connection is metered or limited, you can limit the traffic in your BOINC computing preferences (download rate, upload rate and daily transfer limit).

Rules, blocking and banning

To keep the project fair and safe we can block or ban accounts, computers or forum access, with or without notice, for example for: returning false or fabricated results, cheating or tampering with the software or the data, using several accounts to gain credit, using computers you are not allowed to use, attacking or overloading the servers, spam, harassment, hate speech, illegal content or other abuse in the forum and in messages. Results and credit obtained that way can be removed. For this purpose we keep the account, computer and IP address data involved for as long as needed (legitimate interest, GDPR Art. 6(1)(f), KVKK Art. 5/2-f). If you think a block or ban is a mistake you can write a private message to the project developer; the decision is ours.
