Thermopsis: computer temperatures

How hot do ordinary computers really run? Thermopsis measures the temperatures inside the computers of volunteers: processor, graphics card, drives, motherboard and more, once a minute, all day. Linux computers only.

What the data says

These findings are written automatically from the measurements of the last 14 days and change as new data arrives.

  • 121 computers with 68 different processor models take part. The most common processor is BCM2835 (6 computers).
  • A processor averages 41.2 °C when the computer is idle and 71.4 °C under load: it heats up by 30.3 °C (24 computers measured in both states).
  • Under load the hottest processor model is Intel Xeon E5-2673 v4 (100.3 °C, 2 computers), the coolest is AMD EPYC 9534 64-Core (49.8 °C, 1 computers): 50.5 °C apart.
  • 8 of 42 computers had thermal-throttling events in the last 14 days (the processor slowed itself down to cool off). The most affected processor is 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900HX.
  • The hottest graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti: 77.1 °C on average, 77.1 °C under load (1 computers).
  • The warmest NVMe drive is Intenso NVME at 58.2 °C on average. 1 computers saw an NVMe drive at 70 °C or more.
  • Power: processors draw 56 W under load (2 computers); graphics cards draw 78 W on average (47 computers). These are only the parts that can be measured, so the power taken from the wall socket is higher (memory, board, drives, fans and power-supply losses are not included).
  • 1 computers run at least 10 °C hotter under load than the average of their own processor model. Their owners can check the cooler, fans and thermal paste.
  • 50 % of the computers report fan speeds, 44 % an NVMe drive, 42 % a graphics card and 0 % a battery. Memory temperature sensors are present on 12 %.

Hours measured are the hours that earned credit: about 16.7 credits for every hour of measurements, paid after each six-hour block (UTC time), at most 400 a day per computer.

How to take part

  1. You need a computer that runs Linux (x86-64 or ARM64). Windows, macOS and Android are not supported and will not be.
  2. In your project preferences tick Thermopsis. It is never started unless you tick it yourself.
  3. BOINC then runs a tiny monitor next to your other tasks. It uses almost no processor time and needs no administrator rights. Every ten minutes it sends a short summary (lowest, average and highest value of each sensor).
  4. If your computer has no temperature sensor at all (typical for virtual machines and containers) the monitor says so once and stops, and you will not get more Thermopsis tasks.

What is sent: the kind of hardware (processor, board, graphics chip, drive models and sizes) and the sensor values. Never sent: serial numbers, network addresses, your computer's name, your location or any file. The public pages show products with their counts and averages; a computer is never shown, and nothing links a product's numbers to a volunteer.
